What are Silphie paper labels? 

These kraft labels are made from the fibers of the native silphie plant. 

The silphie plant is cultivated in Germany (where these labels are made). The plants long and late flowering period makes it an excellent food source for bees and insects. Due to it's perennial regrowth it is carbon efficient (CO₂-binding). 

The best part about using Silphie plant as an alternative fibre for paper production is that the papermaking doesn't use chemicals! 

Fibre extraction is done without chemistry... using Steam Explosion (Thermal pressure hydrolysis). This papermaking process is chemical free and only needs some energy and a small amount of water. 

After making the paper, the remaining plant residues from fiber processing are fed to biogas plants as a fermentation substrate and used to generate electricity, heat and gas. The fermentation residues produced after the biogas process are used as fertilizer on the fields. This closes the cycle and ensures optimum utilization of the silphia plant.
